Building Collapse in Yerushalayim Kills 23 and InjuresHundreds

The dance floor of a wedding hall in the Talpiyot
neighborhood of Yerushalayim collapsed last Thursday night
at around 10:45 p.m. sending 23 people to their deaths and
injuring hundreds. On Tuesday after Shavuos, five days after
the tragedy, over 100 people were still hospitalized eight
of them in serious condition.
New U.S. Envoy Starts the Negotiations Ball Rolling

U.S. Mideast envoy William Burns, also the current U.S.
ambassador to Jordan, has begun his difficult work of trying
to end Mideast violence and restart peace negotiations
between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with a flurry
of meetings with the two sides. Appointed to try to get the
sides to implement the recommendations of the international
Mitchell commission, Burns met on Sunday with both Sharon
and Arafat, and again on Monday night (after Shavuos) with
Sharon.
Many Fires Started Erev Shavuos

Several fires burst out in the Yerushalayim area on Sunday
erev Shavuos, as well as near Beit Shemesh, near the Jordan
River, in the Golan Heights and in the Sharon region. The
weather was extraordinarily hot and may have been the cause
of some of the blazes, but some fires are suspected
arson.
The IDF's Conversion Court Meets at the Military Cemetery
on Mount Herzl

A comprehensive investigation which appeared in the Yated
Hashavua of parshas Bamidbar, discloses the
conversion methods utilized by the military conversion
court. The names of the members of that court have also been
revealed after many years in which they were kept secret.

with obvious siyata deShmaya the burial place of
HaRav Yisroel Salanter ztv"l in the ancient cemetery
of Koenigsberg was located. Those involved in this holy task
these past few years could not find an adequate way of
giving expression to their feelings of joy and gratitude to
the Creator. "They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy."
Increased Demand for Shearis Yisroel Products inEurope

Yisroel are currently in great demand in Europe, especially
in the French chareidi community, according to Shearis
Yisroel Director Rabbi Yekusiel Dershowitz. Rabbi Dershowitz
made this statement during a visit to the Euro-Kosher
exhibition in Paris.
Memorial Plaque Erected on Sarah Schenirer Bais Yaakov
Seminary in Cracow

A memorial plaque was affixed to the building of Sara
Schenirer's Beis Yaakov Seminary in Cracow at a recent
stirring ceremony. It was attended by approximately a
hundred women, former Bais Yaakov students from different
countries.
"Askonus, a Holy Venture" Declares Novominsker Rebbe at
79th Agudath Israel Dinner

Speaking to a capacity crowd in the grand ballroom of the
New York Hilton at the 79th Anniversary Dinner of Agudath
Israel of America, Rabbi Yaakov Perlow, the Novominsker
Rebbe and Rosh Agudath Israel, issued a call to young and
older members of the community alike to join and strengthen
the "holy work" of Agudath Israel.
Tel Aviv University Cancels Planned Rav Amnon Yitzhak

appearance by Rav Amnon Yitzhak planned for the afternoon of
Rosh Chodesh Sivan on its Exact Sciences campus.
ZAKA Volunteers Lauded

At the end of the rescue operation at the Versailles halls
in Jerusalem all of the professional rescue and medical
teams praised the scores of ZAKA (Disaster Victims
Identification) volunteers, almost all of whom are
chareidi.
Kiryat Sefer Residents Launch Massive Enrollment
Campaign

one-third of the city's male population, took part Monday
night in a large enrollment campaign organized by Lev
L'Achim and endorsed jointly by HaRav Yosef Shalom Eliashiv
and HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman.

Trying to See Ahead
Prime Minister Sharon definitely deserves credit for finally
taking the battle with the Palestinians to the field which
has the most crucial action: the international press. His
first action in that area seems to have been moderately
successful.

A Jewish Perspective on Self Esteem

Most people recognize the necessity of good self esteem.
Without it, we find ourselves groping in the dark for proofs
to verify the validity of our existence. With it, we feel
the strength to face the challenges of life that come our
way on a daily basis. But the ability to acquire and/or
maintain good self esteem seems to elude us because the
knowledge of its necessity is not coupled with a deep
understanding of the subject.
