Meah Shearim Building Sinking
by Betzalel Kahn
A number of families in the Batei Warsaw neighborhood near
Meah Shearim in Jerusalem were evacuated from their homes
last week. A check by the Jerusalem Municipality's
Department for Dangerous Structures indicated that
significant damage had been caused to the building as a
result of infrastructure work being conducted on the road
beside it. The building had begun to sink.
The Municipality is working in front of Botei Warsaw #37, an
area that serves as a central passageway between
neighborhood buildings. As a result of the excavations, one
of the residential structures sank by 15 centimeters, and
residents of the area claim that the building continues to
sink daily.
On Thursday morning 28 Tammuz, Municipal inspectors arrived
on the site and confirmed that the building is, indeed, in
danger. An order to close the building was issued that same
afternoon. Such an order obligates the building residents to
vacate the premises. The possibility that the Gichon
company, responsible for work on the site, would cover the
costs of accommodating the vacated occupants is being
studied. Shortly, work on strengthening the building
foundations will begin. The occupants will return to the
building only upon completion of the work.
