Beginning on erev Rosh Hashana, the new year has so far been
marked by attacks on Jews around the world. Though the
apparent source and focus of the violence against Jews is
Eretz Yisroel, Jews and Jewish communities around the world
have suffered. In most of the cases the attackers were
Palestinians and Moslems.
No one knew whether to expect hundreds or thousands when revered roshei yeshiva, including the members of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America, decided on erev Sukkos to call for a Chol Hamoed outdoor atzeres tefilla on behalf of embattled and threatened Jews around the world.
Palestinian Violence Likely to Last Several Months; No
Government in Sight Violence in the territories is likely to continue for many
months, and probably through next year, according to several
recent assessments made public in recent days. The Israel
Defense Forces' said on Monday that the Palestinian attacks
were unlikely to end soon and also that the Lebanon front
could heat up again soon. Israel has still not managed to
form a government to deal with the situation.
Prime Minister Ehud Barak cannot decide if he wants to unify Israel or divide it. It was no more than sixteen months ago, right after he was elected, that he said that he would be everyone's prime minister, but only two months later he showed that he was not the religious community's prime minister when he ordered the gratuitous and insulting chilul Shabbos in transporting an oversized turbine component on Shabbos. Small Change Why, I wondered, as I heard the following true story, is it that these miracles seem so commonplace and everyday when they happen in Jerusalem, or in Eretz Yisroel, for that matter? Possibly, because being our living so much in the focus of heavenly attention, they ARE commonplace, and we are used to them. The Laws of Shevi'is Additional Luach Information Davening for Rain In Eretz Yisroel we start saying vesein tal u-motor levrocho on the night of 7 Cheshvan, which falls this year on Motzei Shabbos, parshas Noach, November 4. In Chutz Le'aretz we do not request rain (this year because it does not precede a civil leap year) until Monday night, the night between Dec. 4 and Dec. 6. There are years when this comes out as late as the eighth night of Chanukah (once in a hundred years). 1. If one who lives permanently in Eretz Yisroel began to say in Eretz Yisroel vesein tal u-motor on 7 Cheshvan and afterwards traveled to chutz le'aretz, if he intends to return to live permanently in Eretz Yisroel he continues saying vesein tal u-motor. However, if he has decided to live permanently in chutz le'aretz he must stop saying vesein tal u-motor, and only start when everyone starts in chutz le'aretz. 2. If one who lives permanently in Eretz Yisroel traveled to chutz le'aretz before 7 Cheshvan, even if he intends to return to Eretz Yisroel before December 4 (in a year that does not precede a leap year of 29 days in February), since he is in chutz le'aretz he does not say vesein tal u-motor in the brocho of shomei'a tefilah. 3. If one who lives permanently in chutz le'aretz visits Eretz Yisroel after 7 Cheshvan, even if he intends to return before December 4 (see note 2), since he is in Eretz Yisroel he must say vesein tal u-motor in its regular place--the brocho of borech aleinu. (Mishnah Berurah and Birur Halocho Kamma Vetanina, 117). |
