Vaad HaRabbonim Legiyur Cancels Knesset Invitation Because of Reform and Conservative Attendance

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The representative of the Vaad HaRabbonim Haolami LeInyonei Giyur headed by HaRav Chaim Kreiswirth cancelled his scheduled appearance before the Knesset Aliya and Absorption committee which had met at the request of MK Rabbi Shmuel Halpert (UTJ) to discuss the high percentage of non-Jews among the immigrants from the C.I.S. Even though he was already on the program , and they had in fact made arrangements to accommodate a special delegation from the Vaad in the United States, Rabbi Eisenstein cancelled his appearance at the last minute, in accordance with the guidelines of maranan verabonon gedolei hador, when it was determined that Reform and Conservative representatives were also scheduled to attend.

In a letter to Rabbi Halpert, and the other members of the committee Rabbi Nochum Eisenstein, chairman of the Vaad, wrote:

"It is out of the question for representatives of the heretical movements to participate in a meeting to discuss the fate of the Jewish Nation in Eretz Yisroel. Everyone knows that these movements are destroying the Jewish People by infiltrating non-Jews and pesulei chitun, and that all of their "conversions" are spurious and have absolutely no halachic validity."

The Vaad explained its position further to Rabbi Halpert, saying: "Massive conversions can certainly not solve the serious problem of the high percentage of non-Jews among the immigrants, because it is impossible to expect people who have absolutely no affinity for religion in general nor to Jewish religion in particular -- and to our dismay have integrated totally into the secular way of life in Israel -- to accept the yoke of Torah and mitzvos in a serious manner.

"The failure to accept the yoke of the mitzvos disqualifies a conversion, even bedi'eved."

Rabbi Moshe Gafni condemned the participation of the Reform and Conservatives in the committee meeting, and said it is inconceivable to invite those who caused a spiritual Holocaust and rampant assimilation among the Jews of the United States.
