Proposal for Civil Marriages Voted Down in Knesset

The Knesset plenum has voted down a provocative, offensive bill to institute civil marriages. On 1 Adar Aleph, 52 Knesset members from the coalition and religious parties not in the coalition opposed the proposal. 19 supported it, while 13 abstained.

Tempo Launches Shomer Shabbos Bottle Cap

The Tempo soft drink company has recently inaugurated a special "Shabbos cap" on its plastic bottles, thus solving the halachic problem of opening them on Shabbos. Until now, Tempo bottle caps, as those of other soft drinks, could be opened only by ripping the ring surrounding the cap off of the cap.

The name of Dr. Judith Grunfeld is tied to the pioneering efforts of Britain's Jewish education, both before, during and after the 1939-1945 war, together with Dr. Solomon Schonfeld, architect of the Jewish Day School movement in Britain. Dr. Grunfeld served as Headmistress of the JSS (1933- 1939), "Shefford" (1939-1945) and Avigdor Primary School (1945-1954). Dr. Schonfeld went to Europe after the war to find children who had survived the Holocaust, enabling them to have a new beginning in the U.K.

The Knesset Finance Committee has approved a Governmental request to allocate NIS 25 million in preparation for the planned visit of the pope to Israel in March. The arrival of the pope will cause massive Shabbos desecration, since massive police forces will be required to safeguard his visit, slated to begin on Shabbos kodesh.

The Pediatrics Department of Bnei Brak's Ma'ayenei Hayeshua Hospital opened its doors last week. Professor Yitzchok Verseno of the Schneider Children's Hospital, a top ranking pediatrician of worldwide repute, is head of the department. He is joined by four senior doctors, Drs. Chana Ofir, Ehud Lazar, Yerach Stolratz and Dario Pris, as well as a dedicated staff of pediatric nurses.
