Dr. Judith Grunfeld: International Tribute

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The name of Dr. Judith Grunfeld is tied to the pioneering efforts of Britain's Jewish education, both before, during and after the 1939-1945 war, together with Dr. Solomon Schonfeld, architect of the Jewish Day School movement in Britain. Dr. Grunfeld served as Headmistress of the JSS (1933- 1939), "Shefford" (1939-1945) and Avigdor Primary School (1945-1954). Dr. Schonfeld went to Europe after the war to find children who had survived the Holocaust, enabling them to have a new beginning in the U.K.

Dr. Grunfeld was endeared to thousands of children and teachers whose love and admiration still lives on. She was an inspiring teacher, a charismatic leader, a surrogate mother to countless orphans, a mentor to aspiring educators and a role model to young Jews everywhere. Israel is the home of many of her students, who have come, married and produced another generation of the Jewish people, along with others who now live worldwide.

Expansion of Jewish schools, although acclaimed, carries a major responsibility to an ever-increasing number of children who seek a Jewish education. Their desires to have the same benefits received by their predecessors will be met by an ongoing investment in their future.

There could be no more fitting tribute to Dr. Grunfeld and her vision than an ongoing investment in Jewish education and the future of children of needy families. Therefore, to honor this extraordinary lady and her life, a Foundation is being established in her memory. Its purpose: to assist tuition costs for Jewish schooling in England, where it all started.

Be part of it! Join old friends from all over the world. There is even a choice. Either join "The Judith Grunfeld Commemorative Dinner" in London on May 14, 2000, or participate in the brochure, or just send a donation (or all 3). If you have memorabilia, a fond memory or an anecdote which can be included in the brochure, that too is welcomed. This is a unique opportunity -- don't miss it!
