Broadcasts Calling to Jews to Draw Closer to Yiddishkeit are Approved

by Betzalel Kahn

The Kol Yisrael administration has granted permission to broadcast paid commercials which call on the nonobservant public to draw closer to Yiddishkeit. This comes in the wake of the appeals of a number of those involved in spreading Yiddishkeit, who had applied for permits to broadcast such paid messages.

Last Tuesday (Elul 26) the radio's administration decided to approve the broadcasts of the heretical Reform and Conservative movements, which claim that they represent a "New Judaism." These movements, which are very well-funded, are making a desperate effort to call to the secular public to join their ranks, though they have met with very limited success.

The radio's Board of Directors approved the broadcasting of the messages of the heretics after the representatives of the Reform and Conservative movements appealed to the Supreme Court to order the radio's directors to broadcast their advertisements. At first, radio officials refused to broadcast them, claiming that they did not want to become involved in controversial issues. That is why they have, up until now, carried no such advertising of the type.

In the wake of the decision to permit the broadcasting of these messages, a number of those involved in spreading Yiddishkeit turned to the advertising department of Kol- Yisrael Radio, and asked to broadcast their messages too, especially on the eve of the yomim noraim. The request was filed early Tuesday morning before Rosh Hashanah, and by evening it was approved.
