Badatz-Shearis Yisroel Dedicates Central Warehouse in
Moshav Tsafaria
by B. Rabinowitz
The Badatz Shearis Yisroel kashrus network recently
dedicated a new central warehouse at a modest, moving
ceremony. The gaavad of Shearis Yisroel, HaRav Chaim
Shaul Karelitz, the ravad of London's Kedassia, HaRav
Yosef Tzvi Halevi Dunner, his son, HaRav Eliezer Halevi
Dunner, a member of the Badatz Shearis Yisroel, as well as
members and mashgichim of the Vaad Hakashrus of
Shearis Yisroel took part in the ceremony at Moshav
Tsafaria.
The ravad of London was honored by HaRav Karelitz with
putting up the mezuza on the warehouse's main
entrance. However, after HaRav Dunner adamantly refused to be
so honored, the two rabbonim agreed to share the honor and
put up the mezuza together.
The rabbonim then took a survey of the giant warehouse,
reviewing the latest innovative storage methods that have
been instituted enabling the storage of huge quantities of
fruits and vegetables that will reach the warehouse from all
parts of the country. Ample room for the forklifts to
maneuver through the multitudinous rows will ensure swift
processing of the fruits and vegetables to the transport
vehicles.
The rabbonim proceeded to the boardroom, where they met with
the warehouse owners, Gideon and Dror Chacham. They delivered
words of chizuk, noting the great responsibility that
they have taken upon themselves.
HaRav Eliezer Halevi Dunner, member of the Badatz, discussed
the tremendous siyata deShmaya enjoyed by those who
keep shemitta. He noted that already during
preparations for the coming shemitta year, Badatz-
Shearis Yisroel has seen Hashem's blessing in the fields,
just as the Torah promises.
HaRav Dunner noted that at the beginning of the summer when
Badatz members, led by the gaavad, went out to
supervise the reaping of wheat for next year's matzos, many
farmers reported that this year's yield was much greater than
in other years. They noted that the cost of labor per dunam,
from plowing to gathering, is the value of 400 kilograms of
wheat, while a total of 500 kilograms of wheat are produced
leaving a profit of 100 kilogram of wheat per dunam. This
year, however, the harvest increased by 50 percent to 750
kilograms per dunam on the average, bringing the net profit
to 350 kilograms per dunam: more than three times that of a
regular year.
The gaavad HaRav Chaim Shaul Karelitz delivered short
words of greeting, noting, "You should be blessed for your
efforts and merit the marketing of plentiful fruits of the
seventh year throughout the country."
HaRav Yosef Tzvi Halevi Dunner, head of Europe's mehadrin
hechsher Kedassia, also gave an ardent speech. He quoted
the words of Chazal that, "At the end of the seventh year,
Ben Dovid will come." Keeping the mitzvah of shemitta
hastens the geula. Therefore, if all fine points of
this mitzvah are meticulously kept behidur, as the
Badatz-Shearis Yisroel does, according to the guidelines of
the Chazon Ish, it is clear that anyone eating of these
fruits thereby merits to hasten the geula, may it come
speedily and in our days.
The rabbonim then heard a report by the director of Shearis
Yisroel, Rabbi Yekusiel Dershowitz, and the head of the
shemitta department, HaRav Nachman Cohen, about the
system's organizational setup for marketing to various
sectors, retailers and institutions in the coming
shemitta year.
