Tommy Lapid, Where Are You?

by A. Yitzchaki

Democratic Presidential candidate Al Gore has chosen Senator Joseph Leiberman as his running mate. Leiberman who has been a senator for the past twelve years, is a religious Jew. For the first time in the history of the United States, a Jew has been nominated as a candidate for vice president, and not only a Jew, but an observant one.

Leiberman could also become president, or as one American president put it: "One heartbeat separates the vice-president from the presidency."

So why is the anti-religious militant secular MK Tommy Lapid so quiet?

Only a few days earlier, he lashed out at MK Natan Sharansky for having voted for a religious Jew as President of Israel.

If Lapid was shocked by the election of a religious Jew to a position without any authority he will probably spend many a sleepless nights over the mere thought that a religious Jew might one day be President of the United States.

Tommy Lapid, why did you not wire Al Gore about his "shocking and disgraceful" choice?
