Barak Launches Diversionary Culture War
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
In an obvious attempt to deflect attention from his
difficulties in foreign policy and his lack of action to
tackle domestic issues, Prime Minister Barak unveiled on
motzei Shabbos several legislative initiatives aimed
at secularizing Israel.
Broken Tombstones and Grave Robberies in Eastern
Europe
by G. Safran
Disconcerting reports have recently come in from Jews who
visited Jewish sites which had once been thriving Torah
centers in Europe, but are now in ruins. Visitors who
recently came from Kelm and Kovna in Lithuania were shocked
by the systematic destruction and vandalism in the ancient
cemeteries. In some cases, the dead were robbed of their gold
teeth.
Rabbinical Groups Asked Not to Certify Hetter Mechirah
Produce
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
A concerted effort led by the leading rabbinical authorities
is underway to remove all traces of legitimacy in our times
for selling Eretz Yisrael to Arabs in order to allow its
cultivation during the shmitta year.
HaRav Chanoch Dov Padwa zt"l
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
British Jewry was cast into a deep pall of mourning, upon
learning of the sudden petirah of the esteemed HaRav
Chanoch Dov Padwa, zt"l, the rav of the largest
chareidi community in London. He was 94 at the time of his
petirah.
French Hill Synagogue Desecrated
by Betzalel Kahn
Jerusalem's French Hill Neve David Sephardi synagogue was
desecrated for the second time in two months on a recent
Shabbos kodesh. Vandals broke into the synagogue
through the windows at 4 a. m., destroyed synagogue contents,
and then fled just a few moments before the first synagogue
regulars arrived for Shabbos morning vosikin service.
Since the aron kodesh is protected by a sophisticated
alarm system, the Torah scrolls weren't harmed.
A Sacred Call from the Gedolei Yisroel shlita
The shmitta year is drawing near, and it is in our
hands to return and to merit to fulfill the mitzvah of "and
the land shall rest, Shabbos for Hashem."

Privatize Israel's Lands
Surprising as it may seem, the shortest way to reducing the
price of housing in Israel may be to release farming land to
the kibbutzim and moshavim for development. That would take
control away from the Israel Lands Authority and allow the
free market to assert the expertise it has demonstrated in
allocating resources over the last few generations.

Life in Jerusalem Fifty Years Ago
by Yisca Shimony
Towards the end of World War II, financial conditions at the
Shimony family were getting strained, and this meant cutting
down on bare necessities. The meager income was now even
lower, and everywhere prices scaled upwards.

Additional Luach Information
From the second day of Rosh Chodesh the shofar is blown after
Shacharis, and LeDovid Hashem Ori Veyishi is
said twice a day.
Selichos are said the entire Elul by the Sephardim.
The earliest time of Kiddush Levonoh -- Elul. The time of
Kiddush Levonoh everywhere in the world begins when it
is Motzei Shabbos, parshas Shoftim, the eve of 3 Elul
(September 2), from the beginning of the night.
The astronomical new moon precedes the molad this
month by approximately twelve hours and is on Wednesday, 29
Av, at 1:19 P.M., according to the Summer Clock. After the
molad, the moon comes near to its lowest point
(perigee) and moves extremely quickly and has advanced even
more. In the whole world one can make Kiddush Levonoh
on Motzei Shabbos even according to the Chazon Ish who
did not make a berochoh on the moon until it is big
and high in the sky.
