Beware: High Risk Eggs Sold in Machaneh Yehuda
Market
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended the detention of
two suspects accused of selling eggs brought into Israel from
the territories. Mordechai Tziyon, owner of a stall in the
Machaneh Yehuda market, and his employee Elmuschav Ihav were
remanded for an additional four days.
The eggs in question were transported under inferior sanitary
conditions in a vehicle lacking insulation at a time when
temperatures outside soared to over 104 degrees Fahrenheit
(40 Centigrade). Police say that such eggs pose a public
hazard, because they are liable to harbor salmonella and may
cause serious illnesses.
The police representative in the court, Shalom Rabi, claimed
that he had noticed a car -- which apparently was driven by
Elmuschav -- driving between the Shuafat-A-Ram checkpoint and
French Hill. "I called out three times, but he didn't
respond," Rabi said. "I drove toward him, and when I was able
to establish eye contact, I told him to halt. He told me that
he wouldn't stop. He tried to move to the right and then to
the left and then to drive against the flow of traffic. He
then attempted to throw me off the road and smashed into the
back of my car. He endangered me and other cars in the area.
After about 200 meters, he stopped."
The Magistrate's Court determined that during the initial
police investigation Mordechai Tziyon had confessed to the
felony attributed to him, but did not provide satisfactory
answers as to the source of his eggs. The court added that
this is a very serious crime, punishable by 3-7 years in
prison.
