A huge throng of members of the chareidi community of
Manchester participated in the levaya of the righteous
Rebbetzin Tzvia Friedman, o"h, widow of HaRav Yisroel
Zeev Friedman, zt"l, a ram in the Manchester
Yeshiva.
Rebbetzin Tzvia Friedman was born in 5674 (1914) in Radin.
Her father, HaRav Mordechai Drier (Drori), presided as a
rosh yeshiva and then as a rav in the city of Knishin,
where he was a famed marbitz Torah. In that home,
which was saturated with Torah, she absorbed her great love
for Torah and those who toil in it.
Her family was related to the Chofetz Chaim and their uncle
was HaRav Moshe Landinski, the rosh yeshiva of Radin.
Her family ties with these gedolei hador had a great
impact on the ambience of the Drier's home and on the
chinuch of its children.
In time, her brother, HaRav Moshe Dovid Drier, author of
Duda'ei Moshe and a student in the Radin yeshiva, was
appointed to a position in the Gateshead Yeshiva, which had
been established by her uncle HaRav Dovid Drier. It was there
that her brother became acquainted with HaRav Yisroel Zeev
Friedman, her future husband, who was well known for his
extensive knowledge in Shas and poskim. On the
day of their wedding, which took place in England, war was
declared and as a result the young couple was, bechasdei
Hashem, saved from the Valley of Death.
Rebbetzin Friedman was known for her many acts of
chessed and was active in many areas. Roshei
yeshiva from Eretz Yisroel arriving in England
would stay at her home. The impoverished and ailing would
find succor for their distress in the Friedman home, and it
was a permanent residence for many while they were in
Manchester.
The levaya, which took place in Manchester, was
attended by hundreds of members of the local chareidi
community, who bemoaned the loss of the eishes chover
who had been so active among them.
At the levaya in Eretz Yisroel, hespeidim were
delivered by her brother, HaRav Zalman Drori, the rav of the
Chemdas Tzvi beis medrash; by HaRav Boruch Shimon
Solomon, the Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikvah and the rosh
yeshiva of Nachlas Dovid; and by her brother, HaRav
Mordechai Drori, the rosh yeshiva of Chemed. All
stressed the keser shem tov she had merited through
her deeds.
