Jerusalem Rabbonim Decry Video Trend

by Betzalel Kahn

At a special meeting held on motzei Shabbos 19 Kislev, the rabbonim of Jerusalem's Har Nof neighborhood decided to wage an all-out battle against the trend of supposedly "approved" videos, due to the their highly negative influence on both youngsters and adults viewing them.

At the meeting, attended by Har Nof rabbonim from all circles, prominent activists testified to the damage these films have wreaked on many families. The activists told the rabbonim about shocking incidents which were the direct outcome of viewing such films, and noted that youth are particularly vulnerable to their destructive influence. They said that these films contain indecent sights and violence and are not censored in a responsible manner.

The rabbonim summoned a resident of the neighborhood who rents such films and demanded an immediate halt to his activities, despite the financial damage which he is liable to incur. The activists felt that the unusual summons was necessary because all of their pleas had until then fallen upon deaf ears.

At the meeting, the rabbonim made it clear that advertisements about "censored video tapes" are totally untrue, since even after these films are supposedly censored, they still corrupt the soul and cause great spiritual damage.

In their decision, they asked Jerusalem's rabbonim in all neighborhoods to join the battle against renting of these films and to wipe out this destructive scourge from the chareidi neighborhoods. They warned parents to make sure that their children do not rent or otherwise secure such "censored" films, which cause serious stumbling blocks and defile the soul, Rachmono litzlan.
