Gedolei Yisroel Decry Court Intervention in Halocho and Tradition

On erev Shavuos, maranan verabonon, members of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of both Degel HaTorah and Agudas Yisroel, issued a statement expressing their opposition to intervention in issues of halocho and Jewish tradition by the Israeli judicial system.

UTJ MKs force Finance Ministry to Meet its Commitments

In the wake of efforts by Rabbi Moshe Gafni, Rabbi Meir Porush and Rabbi Yaakov Litzman, the UTJ representatives in the Knesset Finance Committee, the Finance Ministry has approved allocation money for of an additional 47 classrooms for the chareidi sector for the year 2000. This brings to 286 the number of new, approved classrooms, as originally agreed.

Government Crisis Not Solved

Prime Minister Barak continued to project his usual confidence that everything would be worked out, but the basis for this feeling was not evident with regard to the one-year- old government's deep coalition crisis. The ideological rifts that caused the discontent of NRP and Yisrael Ba'aliya have not been closed, and the financial troubles of Shas have not been solved.

Hundreds of residents of the Old City of Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter took part last week in a prayer rally in the Churvah Square. The rally was in protest of attempts by Moslem extremist elements to renew use of the mosque next to the Ramban synagogue in the center of the Quarter.

Labor Ministry To Enforce Work and Rest Law

According to Ministry officials, the Ministry of Labor and Welfare will continue to enforce the Work and Rest Law. Its inspectors will issue fines to businesses illegally employing Jews on Shabbos.
