The Jewish community of Slovakia has agreed to allot 15,000
dollars to the Rescue Committee involved in renovating the
Jewish cemetery of Unsdorf.
Unsdorf was a vibrant Jewish city prior to the Holocaust. All
that currently remains to commemorate the illustrious Jewish
past of Unsdorf is a cemetery.
Erstwhile former residents of Unsdorf visiting it during
recent years, were startled to see the neglect prevailing in
the cemetery -- neglect found in cemeteries where there is no
one to attend to preservation and upkeep. After numerous
efforts, the Rescue Committee managed to persuade Slovakian
Jewish communal leaders to allocate 15,000 dollars to
renovate the cemetery. This amount, however, constitutes only
half of what is really required to complete the
renovations.
Rabbi Mordechai Friedman of New York has contributed an
additional 5000 dollars, while an additional philanthropist
from Vienna donated 2000 dollars. The committee currently
needs an additional 8000 dollars in order to begin work.
Additional monies are also needed to hire a permanent
guard.
The Rescue Committee says that former residents of Unsdorf
and others are interested in contributing to this purpose may
deposit their donations in the fund's account in Israel, in
The First International Bank, Poalei Agudas Yisroel branch of
Haifa, account number 187-105-615552, under the names Aaron
or Visper Alfred.
