On Shabbos parshas Vayechi, chareidi residents of
Ashdod held a demonstration against the R. A. Shalit
construction company, whose workers were blatantly involved
in chillul Shabbos at a local building project. Members
of the Ashdod community saw the workers excavating and
pouring cement on the construction site in Area 7 of the
city. A tractor even drove through the religious neighborhood
several times.
A number of avreichim vehemently protested this blatant
chillul Shabbos. At the demonstration, a construction
worker threw cement at one of the rabbonim. The foreman
called the police, who then ordered the workers to halt
construction and the demonstrators to disband.
Community representatives filed a complaint with the Ashdod
police, expressing outrage at such chillul Shabbos. The
fact that the company is also working on a project for the
chareidi public serves to exacerbate the problem. A request
for comment from the company's manager was ignored. Community
representatives have informed the R. A. Shalit company that
they will spare no efforts to prevent further chillul
Shabbos.
