Chief Rabbinate Issues Groundbreaking Directives for Registering Converts for Marriage

The Chief Rabbinate has issued a set of concrete guidelines to rabbonim on the issue of registering engaged couples in cases where a questionable conversion certificate is presented. Released for the first time, the directives instruct the rov handling the marriage registration to transfer the case to the regional Rabbinate beis din to clarify whether the convert genuinely undertook Torah and mitzvas at the time of the conversion.

UTJ Protests Grave Digging Incidents

Following a rash of incidents this week in which burial caves were dug up, United Torah Judaism discussed the issue during the party's weekly meeting Monday, where members spoke out firmly against excesses by archaeologists and the Antiquities Authority.

The United Torah Judaism faction in the Jerusalem City Council decided this week to boycott Mayor Nir Barkat's tour of the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood after noting that his daily schedule update sent to City Council members was riddled with false, provocative statements from the neighborhood's Community Administration.


Rabbinical Council for Shabbos Sanctity Discusses Upcoming Summer Programs

As Torah and educational institutions and seminaries put final preparations into place for camps and other summer programs, members of Vaadas HaRabbonim Lemaan Kedushas HaShabbos, founded by gedolei Yisroel, met on Erev Shabbos Parshas Shlach to discuss the obligation to arrange trips only to Shabbos-observant sites.


Shanghai's Jewish Past Rediscovered at Expo 2010

Ever since Shanghai's last Jewish resident, Max Liebowitz, passed away in 1982, not a single Jew lived in the Chinese city, which was very cosmopolitan before the Communist Revolution in 1949 and a refuge for Jews fleeing the Nazis.


HaRav Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l

Cloaked in mourning thousands were on hand Monday night to lay to rest HaRav Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l, a talmid chochom and the author of numerous books, who served as a dayan and a marbitz Torah for decades. He passed away in Jerusalem on Monday at the age of 81. The levaya, led by rabbonim and dayonim, set out from his beis medrash in Jerusalem's Kiryat Moshe neighborhood.
