Efforts to Avert Shabbos Desecration at Concert Outside Old City

By Yechiel Sever

Vaadas HaRabbonim Lemaan Kedushas HaShabbos and United Torah Judaism city councilmen met on Erev Shabbos Parshas Ki Seitzei to discuss ways to bring about the cancellation or rescheduling of a concert slated to take place on Motzei Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim-Veyeilech right outside the Old City, causing large-scale Shabbos desecration.

At the end of the meeting it was decided that strong action must be taken against the planned event: rabbonim on the Vaadoh will meet with Mayor Nir Barkat and Avi Nir, the CEO of the production company organizing the event. The rabbonim were also scheduled to make a round of visits to the homes of maranan verabbonon shlita to have them decide how to proceed in the matter.

On the very Motzei Shabbos when thousands of Jews begin reciting Selichos — including many who will travel to Kosel, the remnant of Beis Hamikdosh, for Selichos — just outside the Old City walls event organizers plan to hold a concert that is forbidden in and of itself, and in addition, because it is scheduled to begin at 8:00, will cause large-scale chilul Shabbos during the setup process.
