UTJ Signs Support Agreement with Government; Shinui Cannot Tolerate any Money going for Chareidim
By Eliezer Rauchberger, Betzalel Kahn, and M. Plaut

United Torah Jewry will vote for the national budget for 2005 and the Arrangements Law under an agreement reached Sunday between party representatives and a Finance Ministry representative. The agreement includes a transfer of NIS 290 million for yeshivas, kollelim, talmudei Torah and other educational institutions as well as a pledge by the government not to impose further disproportionate cutbacks on funding for the chareidi sector. As soon as it was announced, Shinui said it would not vote for a budget that includes money for chareidim.

Excavation Stoppage Extended at Cemetery in Acco
By Betzalel Kahn

Though little concrete progress has been made towards finding an engineering solution to prevent the desecration of graves in the ancient Jewish cemetery in Acco it was decided to extend the order to cease excavation work at the site. On Monday, prime minister Sharon ordered the Transportation Ministry to wait another two weeks while searching for a solution. The order came after a meeting between Sharon, Government Secretary Yisrael Maimon, and UTJ MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni.

"The Mount of Olives is not merely a cemetery but a historical, spiritual and cultural site, and this is a national issue requiring monetary investment," said Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs Minister MK Natan Sharansky, during a meeting of the Knesset State Comptroller Committee held at the request of Committee Chairman MK Amnon Cohen (Shas) to obtain the State Comptroller's opinion on the neglect of the Mount of Olives.

By G. Klein

The Knesset Education Committee gave final approval for a proposal by Education Minister L. Livnat to include Beitar Illit and Modi'in Illit in the extended school day program and the nutrition project. MK Rabbi Ravitz Works to Block Passage of Gambling Laws
by Eliezer Rauchberger

"I am opposed to a casino in Israel. Setting up a casino is not a good idea and its significance and repercussions would definitely be detrimental. There is no justification for such a move," said Education Minister L. Livnat, in response to a question posed by MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz.

In Those Days and In Our Times

More than 2,000 years ago, we faced a difficult test: "The evil Greek Kingdom stood against Your People Israel, to make them forget Your Torah and to force them away from the laws that You willed." Greece was a difficult and dangerous enemy, who attacked us at vulnerable points and succeeded in causing considerable damage before she was defeated. Her thrusts were effective and perceptive, and she won many converts to her idolatry from among the Jewish people before she was soundly and repeatedly defeated on the battlefield by the few weak tzaddikim and Torah learners who stood up against her.

Subjugating Nature for Avodas Hashem
by HaRav Menachem Dan Meiseles

Part III

In the first part, HaRav Meiseles first noted that one of the Greek decrees at the time of Chanukah was that the Jews had to carve on their ox's horn that they have no part in Hashem the Elokim of Yisroel and afterwards they had to plow with that ox. He also catalogued the differences between an ox and a donkey, noting that the ox symbolizes high spiritual levels while the donkey symbolizes matter: chomer. Also the ox is kosher while the donkey is not.

Part I

A personal story

Jerusalem, not the city of noisy streets, skyscrapers or humming shopping malls but one of beauty and simplicity, of love of life despite lack and scarcity, of chessed and brotherly love, of the ten measures of wisdom, nine of which were given to the people of Jerusalem.
