Degel HaTorah to Join Government for Three-Month Trial Period

Only with support from the far Left and abstentions from Arab MKs was Prime Minister Ariel Sharon able to establish a new governing coalition on Monday. The Knesset voted 58-56 to approve the appointment to the cabinet of eight new ministers from the Labor Party and another minister from the Likud.


Tens of Thousands Gather to Support Shabbos Observance in Eretz Hakodesh

Tens of thousands of participants including dozens of gedolei Torah, admorim, dayonim, rabbonim and public figures came to Yad Eliyahu in Tel Aviv Monday night erev Rosh Chodesh Shvat to take part in a rally to protest increasing Shabbos desecration throughout Eretz Yisroel.


Budget Discrimination Against Chareidim in Beit Shemesh Continues

Degel HaTorah representatives on the Beit Shemesh City Council were demonstrably absent from a council meeting to discuss the city's 2005 budget, claiming that the meeting was illegal and the budget submitted for approval was tainted by severe discrimination against the city's chareidi community.

The Ministry of Construction and Housing, through the State Attorney's Office, submitted an appeal against a Jerusalem District Court decision to require the state to uphold agreements signed with the chareidi purchasers of building lots in the Shachar neighborhood in Ramat Beit Shemesh Gimmel.


Stanley Fischer to be Next Governor of the Bank of Israel

Stanley Fischer, 61, currently vice chairman of Citigroup the largest bank in the world, has accepted an appointment as the next Governor of the Bank of Israel (BOI). His economic approach is said to be similar to that of outgoing Bank of Israel Governor David Klein and previous Governor Frenkel, so continuity is expected on the job.

General Accountant Delays General Support Payments, Including Kollelim and Torah Institutions

Finance Ministry General Accountant Yaron Zelicha issued instructions not to transfer general support payments due to the delay in approving the overall state budget. This would delay support payments for yeshivas and other Torah institutions starting January 2005.
