Quinoa Should Not be Used on Pesach
by M. Plaut

For our Pesach issue we received a very nice article on quinoa. For some years, it was widely believed that quinoa is permissible on Pesach. However in fact it is not to be used on Pesach, according to the Vaad Hakashrus of the Eida HaChareidis.

Cigarettes Have Chometz!

Several years ago the RJ Reynolds Company was forced by the US Congress to disclose all of the additives that it puts into cigarettes. There are over 500! These additives are put in to give each brand its distinctive taste, so they are all significant — or at least are so considered by the company.

Travelers Beware when Taking Packages
by Y. Frommer

All travellers are well-advised to be extremely careful and to check the parcels that they have accepted to take for other people. It is recommended that they not take anything from people they do not know personally, and in any case they should be sure of the contents of the package.

Russian Jewish Schools Enroll Non-Jewish Children
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Most of the Jewish day schools in the former Soviet Union register exclusively or mostly children who are Jewish according to halochoh, at least according to their policy. However, there is hardly a school that doesn't have at least some non-Jewish students, not to mention children of mixed families who aren't Jewish at all because their mothers are not Jewish.

OPINION & COMMENT

At the Seder We Experience Geulah

Nisan is the month of Redemption. In Nisan they were redeemed, and in Nisan they will be redeemed (Rosh Hashonoh 11a). This is our history and this is the promise of the future.

Tell Your Son On That Day: Some of HaRav Eliashiv's Teachings on Educating Children
Prepared by Rav Shlomo Rosenstein

Parents' Accomplishments Help Their Children

To the extent that parents sacrifice themselves for Torah, they blaze a trail for their children to follow and it becomes easier for future generations to take the path of life — "Torah will return to a place where it previously found lodging."

Tell Your Son on that Day: Thoughts on Chinuch for Our Generation
by HaRav A.Y.L. Steinman

Chinuch Means Getting Results

There are mitzvos which must be done even without us seeing any results. This specific act is what the Torah tells us to do, so it makes no difference whether or not something good will come of it, the mitzvah must always be done nonetheless. In the case of chinuch the result is also important. One's child has to emerge educated.

Reading the Divine Book of Nature

OBSERVATIONS

Observations: The Cadaver Business in the US — Why Not to Leave one's Body to Science
By M Plaut

The Torah teaches us that even after the soul leaves, it is not through with its body and what happens to its Earthly remains is of ongoing concern to the departed soul even in its new abode. Because of this it is vital to ensure that all of the remains are buried together, and as soon as possible. This is one of the major chessed functions of Zaka: to gather up absolutely all of the remains of those murdered by terrorists in order to bring them to kever Yisroel. This is very important to the departed soul.

Remembering Pesach in the Lower East Side
by Sudy Rosengarten

On Pesach, we went to Zeida Duvid for the Seder. The long hall that led into the narrow dining-room looked somewhat less severe in candlelight. and in the dark, we couldn't see the gloomy backyard, with sagging lines of faded laundry, rusting fire-escapes and hunch-backed alley-cats screeching and bellowing like mourning women.

Additional Luach Information

Pesach falls on Sunday, 15 Nissan (Apr. 24), in Eretz Yisroel, and on Sunday and Monday (Apr. 25) in Chutz Le'aretz. The days until Shevi'i shel Pesach are Chol HaMo'ed.

From Mussaf of Yom Tov Pesach in Eretz Yisroel we say morid hatal in Shemoneh Esreih instead of vesen tal u-motor livrocho.

From Sunday night, Motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach, we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nissan to remember the se'udas Esther that she made when Homon was hung (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shevi'i Shel Pesach falls on Shabbos, 21 Nissan (April 30) and in Chutz Le'aretz on Sunday, 22 Nissan (May 1) is Yom Tov Sheini shel Goliyos - Shmini Shel Pesach.
