The Jerusalem District Court exonerated Elchanan Chakon, former owner of Photo Allen, who was charged with the murder of Rav Yehuda Samet zt"l two-and-a- half years ago. Judge Yoel Tzur determined that Chakon was acting in self- defense when he struck the victim, who passed away one week later.

Businesses Unite to Combat Shabbos Desecration
by Betzalel Kahn

A large group of Shabbos-observant businessmen joined recently to set up Shabbat Menuchah, an organization slated to operate among retail outlets, business owners and food markets to encourage shops to close on Shabbos by providing consumers an incentive to purchase products only at businesses that shut their doors on Shabbos.

Campaign to Prevent Haifa's Grand Kanyon from Opening on Shabbos
By Y. Arielli

United Torah Jewry representatives, together with representatives from other religious parties, met for an emergency meeting with Mayor Yona Yahav after the Grand Kanyon shopping center announced it would open its doors on Shabbos. Yahav took a firm stance against the idea, noting the mall's proximity to the city's chareidi neighborhoods. The various representatives intend to meet with the mall's owners to inform them of the gravity of their intentions.

The advantages of the Shearis Yisroel kashrus system, founded by Rabbon Shel Yisroel Maran HaAvi Ezri zt"l have long been known, along with the tremendous adherence to every detail of kashrus and [Shearis Yisroel's] other endeavors according to the details of halochoh and based on daas Torah.

Threats to South African Jews Following Yassin Killing
by D. Saks

The targeted killing of Sheik Ahmed Yassin, founder and leader of Hamas, has generated widespread fury in South Africa and in particular in its 800,000- strong Muslim community. While no actual attacks against Jews were recorded (so far) beyond a few isolated instances of verbal harassment, the level of anti- Jewish invective, sometimes combined with threats, has been raised to unprecedented heights.

OPINION & COMMENT

Get the Cheats but Don't Tread on Us

By all legitimate means, the government -- any government -- should catch anyone who cheats it. We make no defense of those who lie or misrepresent the truth in any way in order to collect money to which they are not entitled. The government should catch whoever breaks the law and take appropriate punitive action. We say this clearly so that there will be no mistake.

HOME & FAMILY

More Precious Than Pearls
by Sara Gutfreund

Shira took her last look at the tree-lined street of her childhood. She glanced at the perfectly groomed lawns and the white picket fences. Climbing into the taxi next to her chosson, Shira felt a wave of anxiety wash over her. She wanted Daniel to have this year in Eretz Yisrael to learn. But what would she do without her family? And how would she set up a home?

Additional Luach Information

On Sunday night, the night of 13 Nisan (Apr. 4) is the search for chometz - bedikas chometz, and the chometz is burnt the next morning, Monday, 14 Nisan (Apr. 5) until the end of the zman sreifas chometz.

On Monday, erev Pesach, 14 Nisan (Apr. 5) is the fast of the firstborn - Ta'anis Bechoros.

Pesach falls on Tuesday, 15 Nisan (Apr. 6), in Eretz Yisroel, and on both Tuesday and Wednesday (Apr. 7) in Chutz La'aretz. The days until Shevi'i Shel Pesach are Chol Hamo'ed.

From Mussaf of the first day Yom Tov Pesach we say morid hatal in Shemoneh Esreih instead of mashiv horu'ach umorid hagoshem, and also starting chol hamoed we say vesein brochoh instead of vesen tal umottor livrochoh.

From Tuesday night, Motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach, we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nisan to remember the se'udas Esther that she made when Homon was hanged (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shevi'i Shel Pesach falls on Monday, 21 Nisan (April 12) and in Chutz Le'aretz on Tuesday, 22 Nisan (April 13) is Yom Tov Sheini Shel Goliyos - Shmini Shel Pesach.

Many are accustomed to read Pirkei Ovos after Minchah of Shabbos from Pesach until Rosh HaShanah

Our minhag is not to say a Yom Kippur Koton and surely not to fast in the month of Nisan.
