OPINION & COMMENT

The Lower Mikdosh and the Upper Mikdosh

The physical destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh that took place on Tisha B'Av is not the only expression of churban. It is not even the main expression nor is it the first expression of the destruction. It all started from the spiritual churban, as the Shechina was exiled from the Jewish heart.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Relaxing With Your Learning

by R' Zvi Zobin

Learning should be an ongoing activity of pleasure. Bein Hazemanim is not the time to go altogether lax, only to relax. Vacation has its place for us all. This article may not apply to us women directly, but certainly indirectly, expanded to other areas, and certainly, as mothers of budding Torah scholars!

Additional Luach Information

The Shabbos after Tishah B'Av is called Shabbos Nachamu because of the haftorah in Yeshaya 40, "Console, console My people," that is said on that Shabbos. This haftoroh starts a series of shivah denechemosah (seven haftoros of consolation).

END OF FAST - TISHAH B'AV

Yerushalayim: 8:08 P.M.

Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak, and the entire Dan area: 8:10 P.M.

Haifa: 8:11 P.M.

New York: 8:48 P.M.

London: 9:39 P.M., forty-six minutes after sunset.

According to the Chazon Ish, the end of Tishah B'Av in most of Eretz Yisroel is approximately two-thirds of an hour after sunset (sheki'as hamishur and not on the mountain), but in Yerushalayim the end of the fast is earlier.

(Birur Halocho Tinyana, Orach Chaim 562, and Yoreh Dei'ah 262)

The last day for Kiddush Levonoh -- Av

One can say Kiddush Levonoh in the entire world until Shabbos parshas Voeschanan, 15 Av (Aug. 4), at 3:23 P.M., according to the Summer Clock, Israeli time. The final time is therefore, in most of the world, the entire leil Shabbos. In the extreme eastern countries, it is possible to make a berochoh also on Motzei Shabbos until the time according to the difference in times zones in comparison to Eretz Yisroel. If one did not make a berochoh until leil Shabbos it is preferable to make Kiddush Levonoh on leil Shabbos so not to forfeit the mitzvah altogether. In eastern countries it is much more preferable to make Kiddush Levonoh on Motzei Shabbos and not on leil Shabbos, but lechatchilah he should make the berochoh on leil Shabbos and not rely on the little time on Motzei Shabbos when the sky might be cloudy, and he will altogether forfeit the berochoh.

The astronomical full moon is at 8:56 A.M., six hours and twenty-four minutes earlier than the nigud emtzo'i. Although the time of a full fifteen days from the molad is even later than the nigud emtzo'i, in such a case when the astronomical full moon is earlier than the nigud emtzo'i we cannot rely even bedi'eved on that time.
