Warm Joint Statement of Cooperation Between Barak and Clinton
by Mordecai Plaut

After several days of direct talks in Washington, capped by a three-hour one-on-one session, Prime Minister Barak of Israel and President Clinton issued a joint statement indicating broad cooperation in many areas and significant specific agreements on important issues that span virtually the entire gamut of Israel-U.S. relations.

In the Knesset, the Religious Wars Begin

A number of anti-religious bills put forward by MKs from One Israel have drawn fire from chareidi and religious MKs, who denounced the bills as being a total contradiction to the coalition agreement.

Soldiers Participate in Missionary Programs in the Galil
by Betzalel Kahn

Last Monday, Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz demanded of Ehud Barak, who is both Prime Minster and Security Minister, that all missionary activity in the IDF be halted immediately. Rabbi Ravitz made this demand in the wake of a document he received which contained a report of missionary activity among the IDF soldiers, as part of an "informative educational" program for them.

Only Left Can Undermine the Rule of Law By Changing Basic Law
by Eliezer Rauchberger

At deliberations over the change in the Basic Law of Government which enabled the broadening of the Government to allow more Cabinet Ministers (to 24 from the original 18), UTJ representatives did not hide their opposition to the Law nor the fact that they have been compelled to support it because of their obligation under the Coalition agreement.

With Egged to Vosikin at the Kosel
by Betzalel Kahn

Bus service to the Kosel with Egged buses #1 and #2 will now begin at 4:45 A.M., to enable people to reach the Kosel for the early summer vosikin minyan. Egged has taken this step as part of its policy of facilitating transportation for Jews who seek to pour out their hearts to Hashem at the Kosel.

OPINION & COMMENT

Already Violating the Coalition Agreement

It has only been a matter of days since the chareidi representatives in the Knesset, under the direction of the gedolim, raised their hands in support of the current government, in the expectation that the new Prime Minister and all the partners of the coalition would keep their part of the agreement that they just signed with United Torah Judaism (UTJ) to make legal arrangements for yeshiva students to continue their studies uninterrupted, and to maintain the religious status quo. But days is all it took for these agreements to be violated, both in letter and in spirit.

Resurrection
by Rifca Goldberg, Tzefas

You won't believe this. But then again, maybe you will.

I walk home from the old city of Zefat down the staircase. The yellow daffodils breathe rhythmically throughout the hilldside. The fresh spring grasses wave their overgrown tips all the way down to the cemetery. The graves are surrounded by dry, hot earth with an occasional large bourgeoning tree guarding the holy site...
