Local Election Results - 5574

In Bnei Brak, Chanoch Zeibart, the agreed candidate of the chareidi community, won with 95.8% of the vote. In Jerusalem the incumbent mayor, Nir Barkat, won with 51% of the vote. Moshe Leon, endorsed by United Torah Judaism (UTJ) had 45% of the vote, and Chaim Epstein, candidate of the Netzach party, got less than 4% of the vote.

One Quarter of European Jews Hesitate to Appear in Public With a Jewish Look

A recent extensive survey carried out by the FRA European Union's Agency for Basic Rights shows that about a quarter of European Jews are afraid to appear in public with marked Jewish identification signs. The first results of this study were presented this week to a committee against anti-Semitism which met in Kiev, capital of the Ukraine. The study included 5,100 Jews in nine countries of the EU: France, England, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Latvia. It will be publicized in its entirety in a similar gathering to take place soon in Vilna, the capital of Lithuania.

Nurturing Our Children, Ensuring Our Future - Thursday at Agudath Israel Convention

Ensuring the future of Klal Yisroel's mesorah will be the focus of the Thursday sessions at the 91st Agudath Israel of America National Convention. "Parents nowadays are trying to raise their children in the face of unprecedented challenges," noted convention chairman Hashi Herzka. "This year's Agudah Convention will deliver both practical guidance and spiritual chizuk to help fathers and mothers carry out their monumental responsibility of chinuch habbanim."

In a very sorrowful funeral which took place this past Sunday night, Leah Esther Cholak, life partner to the founder of an empire of chessed, Ezer MiZion, was laid to her eternal rest, escorted by over ten thousand people of the creme and elite of the Torah world: rabbonim, roshei yeshiva, dayonim, bnei Torah and thousands of others. She assisted her husband in creating and turning this organization into a massive, monumental stronghold of chessed and indeed, her entire life was devoted to helping others and sacrificing herself for her sick, depressed and suffering brethren.


HaRav Refoel Hamburger
In honor of his yahrtzeit, 26 Cheshvan, 5566

In the year 5483 (1723) a great luminary began to shine forth from Liesland. In the home of the rov of the town, HaRav Yekusiel Ziskind, a son was born and was named Refoel. As he grew up, the little boy's sharp mind and special middos were a wonder to behold, and soon he no longer was suited to remain amongst the small children with the simple melamed.
