Demand to Remove Statues in Rosh Ha'ayin

by L Wassermann

In Rosh Ha'ayin, a statue was put up in a religious neighborhood, and the rov of Rosh Ha'ayin, HaRav Azarya Basis, demanded that the sensitivities of the residents be respected and the statue be removed. The rov said that the installation of such a statue is against the Torah.

Residents, most of whom are Yemenites who were settled in Rosh Ha'ayin when they or their parents arrived here from Yemen, signed a petition saying that the Torah says, "Thou shall not make graven images." The wrote that the mayor installed three statues, and that they remained there in violation of the law and in violation of the Torah. The area is a religious area and the presence of the statues disturbs the residents.
