Efraim Ezriel Shach z"l

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

HaRav Meir Tzvi Bergman led hundreds at the levaya for R' Ephraim Ezriel Shach, the only son of the Avi Ezri, who passed away in Jerusalem at the age of 81, following a serious illness.

Efraim Ezriel Shach was born on 19 Tishrei 5690 (1929) in Keltzk, Belarus to the Rosh Yeshiva zt"l. At the age of 11 he joined his family in their move to Eretz Yisroel. They lived in Tel Aviv for a few months before moving to Jerusalem's Kerem neighborhood, where he studied at Yeshivas Tiferes Tzvi and later at Yeshivas Hevron.

After marrying, for decades he worked as a teacher at various schools in Eretz Yisroel and within Jewish communities abroad. Upon returning to Israel, he served as head of the Netanya Municipality's Education Department, and then worked as director of the Jerusalem District Adult Education Department. In recognition of his educational work, he was selected for the Yakir Yerushalayim award for educational activity for the dissemination of Jewish legacy and Jewish history in Israel and abroad.

Recently he fell ill and passed away on 19 Tishrei, the yahrtzeit of his grandfather, Rav Ezriel Shach z"l.

During the levaya HaRav Bergman noted that the deceased was named in part after his grandfather and passed away on his yahrtzeit, saying the timing is a clear sign of the guiding Hand that rules the world.
