Vandals Attack Great Synagogue in Petach Tikva

by L.S. Wasserman

Congregants at the Great Synagogue in Petach Tikva were shocked beyond belief at the sight of the pogrom and desecration: sifrei kodesh and talleisim lay strewn on the floor, the cabinets were broken open, benches had been destroyed and tables damaged.

The unidentified perpetrators apparently entered the synagogue, which is located on Rechov Chovevei Tzion, breaking in at night through one of the windows. According to indications, they also tried to break into the aron kodesh, but through chasdei Shomayim, they were unable to break into the safe.

The reprehensible vandalism joins a string of incidents that have occurred in the city. At Beit Haknesset Shoneh Halachot, located on the same street, several break-ins and acts of desecration have taken place in recent years. Just two weeks ago a pogrom took place at Beit Haknesset Divrei Chaim-Tzanz when windows were shattered and rocks thrown inside.

At the Great Synagogue itself swastikas were spray-painted one year ago. Some of the sad congregants said after this week's event that this type of crime should not be taking place at all and wondered how it could be that nothing significant is done to put a stop to this terrible disgrace.
