Degel HaTorah MKs Tour Ofakim's New Chareidi Neighborhood
By Y.L. Wasserman
Degel HaTorah MKs toured a new neighborhood for the chareidi community in Ofakim to see the potential the southern city has to offer for the large local chareidi kehilloh. The local Degel HaTorah branch, headed by Rabbi Avraham Deutsch, chairman of the Ofakim housing committee, hosted the MKs.
Knesset Finance Committee Chairman MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni spoke about the importance of the city, which he knows well from the years he lived there. He stressed the importance of conveying to bnei Torah that living in the city's chareidi community is a good choice. He said the project is not merely another building project, but an expansion of the superb kehilloh at a very high level of ruchniyus, and a flourishing, developing community with everything it needs. Rabbi Gafni went on to speak of the importance of finding housing solutions for bnei Torah and building a neighborhood of bnei Torah.
Chairman of the Knesset Public Petitions Committee MK Rabbi Uri Maklev noted that Degel HaTorah has taken a pioneering role in seeking housing solutions ever since the famous Ramat Shlomo project went up in Jerusalem. He praised local Degel HaTorah activists, who undertook, on a volunteer basis, the task of bringing in bnei Torah to populate the new neighborhood.
