Budapest Turns into Hothouse for Antisemitism

By A. Ben Aharon

Experts warn that Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has turned into a hothouse for antisemites. Far-right party Jobbik has become the third largest in the country. Jews are visibly scared, according to an article in Der Spiegel.

Jews are not the only ones suffering from racism in Hungary. Neo-Nazis have attacked gypsies and their families. In a series of murders six people were killed. Still, the right-wing Fidesz party won two-thirds of the seats in parliament, while Jobbik commanded only 16.7 percent of the vote.

"Anonymous" vandals recently smeared pig blood on a Holocaust memorial in Budapest.

According to Hungarian law the government oversees most of the media, yet an official station broadcast a picture of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize laureate Imre Kertesz together with a voiceover about rats in the background.
