Scotland Yard Investigates Antisemitic Speech at London School of Economics

By Arnon Yaffeh, Paris

While students demonstrated in the streets, Scotland Yard detectives went to the London School of Economics to investigate an antisemitic speech given by the editor of pan-Arab daily, Al-Quds Al-Arabi in one of the lecture halls. The lecture by Abdel Bari Atwan sparked an uproar at the illustrious university, when he referred to the Jewish lobby as "murderers of Palestinians in Gaza." Atwan stood at the podium mocking Jewish students protesting his remarks.

The Palestine Society organized the lecture, posting announcements inviting students to hear a discussion of "the impact of the Zionist lobby in the US and Britain." These lectures by Palestinians and Arabs are enlisted to promote the campaign to delegitimize Israel and the Jewish communities that support it.

Thirty Jewish students who attended the lecture found the remarks overtly antisemitic and heckled the Saudi Arabian journalist. Atwan laid blame squarely on "British Jews in the Jewish lobby for the bombings in Gaza," and voiced his support for Hamas. "You bombed Gaza, you killed Palestinians," he shouted at the Jews.

The Jewish Chronicle wrote that the Al-Quds Al-Arabi editor is known in London for lashing out against Jews and Israel. In contrast to Saudi King Abdallah, he was once quoted as saying, "I will go to Trafalgar Square and dance with delight if the Iranian missiles strike Israel ."

Students reported that he cursed and riled during the lecture, which descended into chaos.
