Chareidim Wary of Tent Protests
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Chareidi political leaders expressed concern that the "tent protests" would turn into a new round of chareidi bashing. The Trachtenberg Committee that was set up to find answers to the issues raised by protesters does not include a chareidi representative.
A sign set up by tent protesters in Kiryat Yovel in Jerusalem, which has seen a large influx of chareidi residents over the past decade and has been the scene of tensions as a result, read: "We have had enough of every apartment being sold to chareidim. We have had enough of every building turning into a shul, a mikveh or a day-care center. We have had enough of every notice and advertisement in the neighborhood being a hashovas aveidoh notice, or for a kosher pelephone (cell phone), or for selling a an apartment and writing `No Shabbos calls.' "
MK Rabbi Uri Maklev said, "From the minute these protests began we knew that some would try to turn it, whether from personal or political motivations and a desire to shift attention away from their own actions, to the easiest target which is the chareidi community. But the general public does not believe these lies and it is only a handful of unprincipled people who are behind it. We will fight against every outbreak of this dangerous kind of incitement that says, `Here is a chareidi. Bash him.' "
