Wedding Costs Focus of Gathering at Bnei Brak's Lederman Shul
By Yechiel Sever
Hundreds of avreichim took part in a gathering for Shehasimchoh Beme'ono at Beis Knesses Lederman in Bnei Brak. HaRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita made a special effort to attend the event to boost efforts to raise awareness of the need to reduce wedding expenses and seek ways to avoid going into debt to buy an apartment.
HaRav Tzvi Rotberg, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Beit Meir, spoke fervently on the heavy burden parents struggle to bear and quoted gedolei hadoros on the need to be as frugal as possible. He said today the cost of an apartment is at least half a million shekels, and having to undertake such an obligation can even be a matter of pikuach nefesh. Not only can it pose a hazard to parents' health, but it can also mean that talmidei chachomim, instead of laboring and growing in Torah, have to go from gemach to gemach, which diminishes the gadlus of the generation.
He urged the participants to fulfill the Talmud dictum, "yiso bas talmid chochom," i.e. one should marry the daughter of a talmid chochom, and know how to appreciate Torah. Even if the talmid chochom is unable to provide funds, through this merit the young man will have sons who are talmidei chachomim in their own rights. On the other hand, those who marry with only financial considerations in mind in effect cut short their rise in Torah and corrupt themselves.
