Britain Releases Secret Documents from Mandate Period

By Arnon Yaffeh, Paris

As if by chance, the British Secret Service (known as M15) suddenly found secret documents in the basement of an archive on terror activities by underground movements, Etzel and Lehi.

In London, the Jewish community suspects the discovery is intended to stir old feelings of resentment in Britain over British soldiers killed by Jewish organizations. To this day, anti-Israeli organizations hold memorial days for British soldiers who fell victim in Eretz Yisroel and pledge to exact revenge with the help of the Palestinians. Queen Elizabeth II herself has yet to visit Israel due to these feelings of resentment from the Mandate Period. Apparently disclosing the forged British passports of the assassination of Hamas killer Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai again stirred old memories. The Guardian periodically publishes photos of the King David Hotel bombing, where 91 people were killed, including 17 Jews, 28 British and 41 Arabs in order to show that the Jews, too, perpetrated terror attacks.

All of the telltale signs of incitement appear. Even if the documents are genuine, it is hard to see what benefit results from their release. Their publication is liable to impact public opinion, which is much more sensitive today, and to mix past and present.
