Coalition Members Back Anti-Chareidi Education Legislation
By Eliezer Rauchberger
Anger prevailed at a United Torah Judaism meeting in the Knesset on
Monday after coalition members sought to advance proposals that would
provide funding for schools that upheld the Core Curriculum program
embraced by the secular education system.
Party Chairman MK Rabbi Yisroel Eichler contacted Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu and Coalition Chairman Zeev Elkin to demand they
put a halt to the attempt to undermine the independence of the
chareidi education system. "The coalition cannot permit persecution of
chareidi education through bills that make educational funding
contingent on the Core Curriculum program," Rabbi Eichler told
Netanyahu.
"Those who demand that we vote with the coalition," said party
members, "cannot give free rein to those who hound chareidi education
and legislate laws that prohibit the government from funding
institutions where the Core Curriculum is not studied, as demanded by
organizations such as Hakol Chinuch."
