Education Ministry Introduces Stiff New Rules — Only for Chareidi Sector
By Yechiel Sever
Heads and directors of yeshivas and other chareidi educational institutions across the country have reacted sharply to a new set of guidelines by the Education Ministry's Department of Torah Institutions, requiring them to adhere to strict oversight requirements in order to receive the meager funding the government provides. Although the new regulations are said to be in response to recent revelations of fraud, other sectors are also plagued by fraud and are not subject to such tough regulations.
Roshei yeshivos and principals of schools supported by the Department of Torah Institutions have received new guidelines issued by the department's director, Amos Tzayada, which they say are reminiscent of dark regimes and — since the directives are not imposed on any other educational sector in the country — seem to be designed solely to prevent chareidi institutions from receiving funding rather than just stopping fraud.
In an urgent letter sent to Tzayada, members of the Yeshiva Directors Union wrote that the new guidelines are wholly unacceptable. "Unfortunately, we are unable to agree to the majority of the new points and requirements listed in the letter," they write. "And certainly not when they have no parallel in any government ministry toward any other population segment that are budgeted or funded and must be subjected to oversight."
