MK Gafni: 'Chareidi Citizens Prevented from Living in Various Communities'
By Yechiel Sever
Finance Committee Chairman MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni sent a letter to Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein asking him to put a halt to the practice of preventing chareidi residents from living in various places around the country. In his letter Rabbi Gafni writes, "In recent years we have been witness to a disturbing trend of preventing chareidi residents from living in various communities."
As an example Rabbi Gafni cites Ramot Hashavim, a village between Ra'anana and Hod HaSharon, where a battle is being waged to keep out chareidim. "This week a meeting is being organized in Ramot Hashavim to prevent chareidi Jews from living there. Though `chareidi' is neither a race nor a religion, it is abundantly clear that this is against the law and a blatant violation of human dignity and freedom, equality and every value on which a properly functioning society is founded."
In his letter Rabbi Gafni notes the publicized letter on the issue of preventing the sale of apartments to Arabs, which caused a major uproar in the country recently. "At the present time, following the letter by the rabbis which gedolei Torah and many other rabbis objected to publicly, I have yet to hear from any `intellectuals' — artists, jurists and public figures — who took a stand against the attempt to prevent the chareidi public from living in various places in this country."
