UTJ Opposes Universal Education
By Eliezer Rauchberger
United Torah Judaism members in the Knesset are standing firm against an initiative by Likud and coalition chairman MK Zeev Elkin to legislate a Universal Education Law that poses a threat to chareidi education. They contacted Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, asking him to intervene in the matter.
In a letter to the prime minister, UTJ Chairman MK Rabbi Yisroel Eichler wrote that Elkin announced he would "violate his signature on the coalition agreement and initiate a Universal Education Law, which is the exact opposite of the Chareidi Education Law included in the coalition agreement. It would lead to an anti-chareidi move on an issue that is the foundation of the existence of the Chareidi public."
Therefore, wrote Rabbi Eichler, "During a meeting United Torah Judaism held today, it was decided that we cannot accommodate this serious state of affairs, in which on one hand there is no Chareidi Education Law, and on the other hand the courts are liable to hand down decisions that would undermine chareidi education, and MK Elkin is promoting a law that would strike a blow to chareidi education. As such we demand that the coalition agreement with us be upheld as it is written and that the chareidi Education Law be legislated, otherwise we will be unable to remain committed to it unilaterally."
