Bnei Brak to Open School Year with 1,000 New Students

By L. S. Wasserman

The 5771 school year is slated to open in Bnei Brak with an additional 1,000 students compared to last year, bringing the total to 56,821 kein yirbu. Most boys' schools begin at the beginning of Elul, even though the official school years starts September 1.

A total of 12,940 children are enrolled in municipal and public nursery schools and kindergartens, with 27,029 students in primary schools and talmudei Torah, as well as 16,857 in high schools, seminaries and yeshivos ketanos.

One hundred and forty-five classrooms are under construction and some are scheduled to be ready for use at the start of the school year.

A record budget of NIS 12,265,000 ($3,235,000) has been approved for renovation work at 41 schools throughout the city, using funds provided by the municipality, the Education Ministry and Mifal Hapayis. The various projects include interior and exterior refurbishing, playground development, replacing asbestos roofing, installing window bars, providing handicapped access and building acoustic walls.

To improve safety conditions and aesthetics, a special fund amounting to NIS 1.3 million ($340,000) has been earmarked for general renovation work at 12 nursery schools and kindergartens.
