Tragedy in Kiryat Sefer: Tefillin Worker Suffocates to Death
By L.S. Wasserman
R' Reuven Nadal z"l, 37, of Modi'in Illit inhaled toxins and suffocated after being exposed to sulfuric acid in a storeroom used for tefillin production on Rechov Chasam Sofer. Hatzoloh and Magen David Adom paramedics summoned to the site of the work accident began performing CPR, but were unable to revive him. After half an hour an MDA physician pronounced him dead. He left behind a wife and eight children.
R' Nadal lost consciousness in the tefillin factory when the combination of two chemicals, sulfide and acid, created an acidic cloud, and he inhaled the fumes.
After family members repeatedly searched for him, they sensed trouble and sent one of the factory workers to the site. Upon seeing R' Nadal's condition he immediately summoned rescue services, but their prolonged efforts to resuscitate him failed.
Five Hatzoloh and MDA volunteers were sent to Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer to ensure they had not been adversely affected by the fumes.
