UTJ Opposes Standardized Testing Proposal
By Yechiel Sever
United Torah Judaism sent a firm demand to the Prime Minister to take off the agenda of last Sunday's cabinet meeting a legislative proposal submitted by the Education Minister that would require all educational institutions in the country, including recognized but unofficial institutions, exempt institutions, unique cultural institutions (i.e. yeshivos ketanos), etc. to administer the new RAMA exams.
According to UTJ members, proposals on highly sensitive issues should not be advanced without consulting or reaching a consensus with the coalition parties. "On Sunday [7 Av] a legislative proposal will be presented to the government for approval, at the request of the Education Minister. It deals with the RAMA [standardized testing]. The law is designed to apply to all educational institutions in the country, including recognized but unofficial institutions, exempt institutions, unique cultural institutions, etc.
"United Torah Judaism views this legislative proposal as a blatant, unprecedented attempt to intervene in the chareidi public's curriculum, and as such is an overt violation of the coalition agreement," read the letter, which went on to demand the issue be taken off the agenda of the cabinet meeting.
