Several Sophisticated Sefer Torah Thefts

by L S Wasserman

Several Sifrei Torah were stolen from small communities in the vicinity of Lod, including Achisomoch, Yagel, Achiezer, Nili and Mevo Choron. The thieves displayed a detailed knowledge of the way the shuls work and the sifrei Torah are stored.

In several instances, the parchments were just cut away from the atzei chaim which were left inside the Aron Hakodesh. Some thefts were carried between Monday and Thursday when several days would go by before the congregants would notice the missing property. In Mevo Choron, the thieves took only the best and most valuable of the Torahs that were present. Often, no signs of breaking in were evident, suggesting that the thieves knew where to find a key.
