Jerusalem Mayor Barkat Visits HaRav Eliashiv
By Yechiel Sever
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat paid a visit last week to Maran
HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv shlita, to receive his
blessings for success in preserving Jerusalem as a holy city
and working to provide for the city's religious needs.
At the start of the visit, HaRav Eliashiv noted, "Jews pray
for Jerusalem three times a day and Jerusalem is the only
city known as `Yerushalayim Ir Hakodesh,' and its
sanctity must be upheld." Deputy Mayor Rabbi Yitzchok
Pindrus, who accompanied Barkat, then pointed out the weighty
responsibility placed on the Mayor in preserving the holiness
of the city.
Mayor Barkat told Maran he is working in full cooperation
with his replacement and deputy, Rabbi Pindrus, as well as
the other chareidi representatives at the municipality, to
ensure all city residents receive the services they are
entitled to, both in education and religious matters.
HaRav Eliashiv applauded his cooperativeness and ended the
visit by blessing the Mayor for success, for the sake of
Jerusalem's sanctity and the pure education of yaldei
Yisroel.
