Buenos Aires: Antisemitic Rioting Interrupts Pro-Israel Event
By R. Hoffner
Violent antisemitic demonstrators interrupted an event in Buenos Aires to celebrate 61 years of Israeli independence. Held in Plaza de Mayo opposite City Hall, the event drew members of the Jewish community, local activists and high-ranking city officials.
Suddenly a group of 20 people burst out from a nearby subway station carrying pro-Palestinian and antisemitic signs, shouting chants and clashing with the crowd on hand. The demonstrators were aligned with a previously unknown Leftist, anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian organization called Revolutionary Action Front.
The rioters wreaked havoc for 15 minutes, overturning stands with Jewish books and symbols and assaulting people attending the event. Several Jewish youths required medical attention and one police officer suffered moderate back wounds. A police force had to remove Israeli Ambassador Daniel Gazit from the scene to protect his safety.
Five of the attackers were arrested and one has already been indicted for civil disorder. Investigators are still searching for the other suspects, including one believed to have been carrying a gun with live ammunition.
