3.5 Years Behind Bars for Desecrating Sifrei Kodesh and Torching Sukkah

By G. Lazer and Yechiel Sever

The Haifa District Court sentenced a 20-year-old resident to three-and-a-half years in prison and a one-year deferred sentence for torching a succah alongside a beis knesses, destroying sifrei kodesh and spray- painting graffiti. The accused confessed to six counts of assault and destruction of property.

The judge said he believed the acts were not perpetrated due to racism but rather behavioral disturbances under the influence of drugs. The court said the defendant's acts offended religious sensibilities and created a public disturbance.

The court ruling noted the severity of the transgressions lies in the very act of crimes such as arson, exposing the public to a present danger and the racist comments that accompanied the acts.
