MK Maklev: Mikveh Vandals in Ramat Beit Hakerem Should Be Fully Prosecuted
By Yechiel Sever
MK Rabbi Uri Maklev submitted a question to the Minister of Internal Security during a Knesset meeting, demanding the police press full charges against the individuals responsible for severe acts of vandalism verging on real antisemitism against the mikveh in Jerusalem's Ramat Beit Hakerem neighborhood.
"Construction work on the mikveh in Ramat Beit Hakerem began, based on requests from neighborhood residents," said MK Rabbi Maklev. "Construction got underway following prolonged red tape, including a petition to the District Court and an appeal to the High Court. The petitioners' claims were rejected by the respective courts in both cases.
"In recent weeks we have seen a handful of local residents damage and sabotage public property and, in a notice disseminated in the neighborhood, local residents were invited to a `happening' organized at the site. In the notice residents were even asked to come dressed `in painting clothes' in order to `build a protest display against the mikveh.' Jerusalem Police were at the scene and the outcome was graffiti, provocation and tens of thousands of shekels in property damage due to the `happening' by a handful of residents."
Rabbi Maklev demanded answers to several questions: "What did Israel Police do at the site in order to prevent damage to public property? Did Israel Police, which was aware who organized this `happening,' investigate and prosecute the perpetrator to the extent of the law? What will Israel Police do to protect the neighborhood residents and their property from this handful of lawbreakers?"
