UTJ Demands Investigating Committee Form to Look Into
Jerusalem Clashes
By Eliezer Rauchberber
An investigating committee will be set up to look into the
clashes that have shaken Jerusalem in recent weeks, Deputy
Education Minister Rabbi Meir Porush told a Knesset meeting
held to discuss the issue this week.
"Where the Mayor derives the authority to penalize entire
city neighborhoods must also be looked into," said Rabbi
Porush. "How can it be that if somebody burns a trash bin at
Rechov Mea Shearim 85 an old man at Rechov Mea Shearim 5 has
to suffer because the municipality decided not to clear away
his trash? Even if the municipality has to take extreme
measures, is that the policy? When collective punishment is
used against other sectors here in this country or in other
countries, we go up in arms and protest this kind of
conduct."
Rabbi Porush also told the Knesset, "I'm not looking for ways
to spar with the Mayor. Under the previous mayor, Rabbi
Lupoliansky, there were also incidents like this, and when it
was necessary to stop services [the Mayor's Office] did not
issue press statements because it's nothing to be happy
about. Therefore the question is about the municipality's
conduct, and I'm telling you there are things that ought to
be looked into."
