2.5 Million Tourists Visited Israel This Year

by G. Lazer and Yechiel Sever

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, between January and October of this year 2.567 million visitors entered Israel — 36 percent more than the same period last year. The number of tourists entering came to 2.2 million (an increase of 26 percent) while 394,000 stopped for one-day visits, which started to become common in 2007.

Of the visitors entering the country 1.78 million arrived by plane (an increase of 22 percent), mostly via Ben Gurion Airport. Another 387,000 came overland — 51 percent more than the same period last year.

In October 303,000 visitors entered the country, 247,700 tourists and 55,000 one-day visitors. Tourists are defined as visitors who stay in the country for at least 24 hours. Boat passengers accounted for 12,000 of the day visitors.

October also posted the record in 2008 for the largest number of visitors arriving on a single day. On the 12th, two days before Succos, 55,000 travelers arrived.
