Gedolei Yisroel to Sign Statement Against AM/PM and Shefa Shuk

By Yechiel Sever

Gedolei Yisroel are currently in the process of signing a position statement regarding the crisis with AM/PM convenience stores and Shefa Shuk supermarkets as well as the other stores associated with the Alon Group, but when to release it to the general public has yet to be decided. The document, already signed by many rabbonim, is being kept in a safe, ready for use pending a final decision by gedolei Yisroel, in the hope that the Alon Group will accede at the last minute to requests to stop desecrating Shabbos.

Vaadas HaRabbonim Lema'an Kedushas HaShabbos sent a delegation to the homes of gedolei Yisroel shlita to receive their blessings and encouragement in the campaign against the breach in the walls of Shabbos Kodesh. Gedolei Yisroel said Shabbos is a cherished gift from Borei Olom that unites Jews of every group and background.

Kashrus organizations told Vaadas HaRabbonim that when a decision is reached to issue a ban they will immediately rescind their supervision of Shefa Shuk and all of the products bearing the Shefa Shuk label.

The AM/PM chain has started operating many of its stores in the Gush Dan area seven days a week and plans to open more stores on Shabbos as well. The policy not only offends the shomer Shabbos public, but even irks many Jewish storekeepers who don't keep Shabbos but prefer to close on Shabbos, yet feel that AM/PM is compelling them to open their doors as well in order to compete.

Recently Shefa Shuk stores in chareidi areas have been nearly empty and distributors who supply the supermarket chain with goods report that sales have been cut in half.
