New Shas MK Assumes Post
By Eliezer Rauchberger
During a special meeting of the Knesset plenum during its
spring recess, Mazor Bayana was officially made a Knesset
member in place of Rabbi Shlomo Benizri who had to step down
after having legal troubles. For the first time ever the
Knesset now has two Ethiopian MKs serving, Bayana and Shlomo
Molla (Kadima), who replaced MK Avigdor Yitzchaki following
the latter's resignation three months ago.
Bayana will serve as a provisional MK until the legal
proceedings against Benizri are complete. If Benizri decides
to file an appeal to his ruling and the appeal is granted, he
will be able to return to the Knesset in place of Bayana.
At first there were doubts surrounding Banaya's eligibility
to serve on the Knesset though he is next in line of the Shas
list, because at the time the list was submitted to the
Knesset during the previous election campaign he was serving
as rabbi of the Ethiopian kehilloh of Beer Sheva,
which disqualifies him according to the Knesset Foundation
Law since it is considered a civil service position.
